About Us.

Back in April of 2021, after finishing all of Fantasy High Season 1, I had purchased the D&D Starter Set and set out to find other people to play with. After a couple days of getting ghosted on r/LFG, I saw a post advertising an introductory game for new players. “Oh this is perfect!” I thought, and I PM’d the poster with a short message about how I was a new player who’d been struggling to find a game. After getting a reply, I was invited to a small Discord server and met James for the first time.

As we played, James let us know that his post was getting insane amounts of traction on reddit! He had almost 50 people per day messaging him with stories similar to mine; that they were new players struggling to find groups that would accept or teach people how to play D&D.

Seeing this growing demand from new players, James created what would later become the Altrole Discord server, and invited our group in alongside all the other respondents to learn to play together. James set up some basic seminars to teach people character creation, combat rules, and introductory lessons on roleplay. As more and more people joined every week, I saw the potential for what we had here and helped out by teaching what I knew.

The server was continuing to grow exponentially, bringing in almost 100 people every week! Our growth brought new challenges, but we rallied to meet them:

• • • Our DM shortage was solved by teaching new players through the Learning to DM series we created

    • We navigated a growing demand for classes by recruiting members of our own community to become the very first Altrole staff

    • We expanded our course catalogue with advanced courses, both for players and DMs!

Since then, we’ve continued to grow and share our message of lowering the barrier of entry into D&D and TTRPGs — which we still uphold to this very day!

We’ve grown from a small server into a community of over 6,500 players, 20+ staff members running events every day, and over 500 Game Masters running not only D&D games, but other TTRPGs as well! With over 30 courses that teach everything you could need to know to play TTRPGs, Altrole has become the hub for people who are new to tabletop gaming to learn, group up, and get started!
